This book is a classic. One of the best books of the author, Honore de Balzac, whom I admire greatly. He has written several other books I have read, such as Lost Illusions, Pere Goriot, Eugenia Grandet. They are all excellent books together with this one.Product details

The Lily of the Valley Honore De Balzac Katharine Prescott Wormeley 9781492222064 Books Reviews
I think some of Balzac's novels may be difficult for new readers (new to him, that is). I adore his long, desciptive paragraphs, sometimes one sentence seems to take up the whole page! But modern readers are not used to this type of literature, nor to the period in which M. Balzac was writing. The Wild Ass's Skin or Lost Illusions might be good to start with, and if you enjoy those, you will be hooked. The richness of description and the drawing of human character, by Balzac, is ever delicious!
Balzac never disappoints, this book make for a brilliant read, however descriptions as usual are bit too long and most of them can be skipped, but the book as a whole is good.
Not what I was looking for.
Wanted to read Balzac because I love France and had just visited the Loire Valley. Maybe its because social mores and castes have changed so much in the last 150 years, its a very slow read...haven't finished it --but in all fairness, I can whip right through any work of Jane Austen's and her novels are even older...its a slow read.
Not among Balzac's best, but still worth reading if you've already read his better known works.
Don't think you can skip to the end and "get it." Do read the entire novel and you will be rewarded with a well balanced, pitch-perfect ending. This novel is an excellent introduction to Balzac and well worth reading.
Having never read anything by Balzac, I tried this book. Was disappointed in the
storyline, the characters, and finally went online to find a review of it.
I will try another book by Balzac to see if I might like it.
