Hooray! Our favourite time-travelling detective Tractus Fynn is back! And Patrick as well! If you haven’t read the first of the series Sand City, the second book Jump City stands on its own. However, you really should read Sand City since it is also brilliant and introduces the concept of ‘jumping’ or travelling forward and backwards in time. In fact, I strongly recommend reading both books more than once; otherwise you’ll miss a lot of sly humour and references.Jump City has mysteries within mysteries and visits familiar locations such as Sand City and also many new ones. One of my favourite locations, the Asylum in Sand City, is explored in more depth. A new location, the Library along with some new time-travellers offers a new and fascinating wrinkle in time travel. And how exactly did those cars get to the bottom of the lake?
M.K. Alexander’s alternate history and time-lines are both plausible and inventive. As a historian, I can be highly critical of ‘what if’ approaches to history. However his detail and insight into the Great Depression in Jump City is impressive.
Overall a fun and excellent read! I’m looking forward to more in this series.

A real page turner

As an Alexander fan of some duration I have enjoyed his writing for some time. Since his pseudo-Victorian Jekyl's Daughter and the insightful Random Sacrifice, through his cyber-spy adventures and the real life story of his mother's escape from Greece to become an American. All exciting and insightful. Now, his second time travel murder mystery, Alexander has really out done himself.
Small town reporter Patrick Jardel, who we met in Sand City is involved in another case with the time traveling Inspector Tractus Fynn, who coaches Patrick in his own efforts to traverse the conventional limits of space and time in order to save lives, solve the mystery and preserve life as we know it. Exercising his amazing abilities to the utmost to do so, in conjunction with the forces of good, Fynn's protege tells a fast moving clue-filled tale of dramatic adventure. Alexander has reached a level of maturity in his writing that suggests great yet untapped potential, while providing an entertaining and witty piece of work, both in breadth and detail.
I was pleasantly surprised when I picked up this novel and found a wonderfully complex world. It was full of characters you soon become attached to and a plot which will keep you reading. I would definetely recommend giving this one a try!
Jump City Apprentice is a fast paced and exciting novel that chronicles the adventures of Inspector Tractus Fynn and apprentice/reporter Patrick Jardel. Fynn and Jardel are tasked with solving myriad mysteries while also traveling or "jumping" through time. The characters in the book are interesting and complex, and the author expertly manages the multiple plot twists in a way that keeps the reader guessing what great adventure next awaits them. While the reader unstacks the mysteries that are organized like a Russian nesting doll, they will surely enjoy the sharp witted prose, as well as the comedic aspects of the story.
Each time Patrick "jumps", his character becomes more developed and interesting. Inspector Fynn is there to guide Patrick's journey and to help him solve the problems that await him. Patrick jumps to different eras throughout time and the reader is treated to historical detail that is meticulously researched.
Overall, this novel is another great piece of the Jump City series. Some of the mysteries in the novel will make the reader wish there were separate books devoted only to solving the crimes at issue - and hopefully there will be. I highly recommend Jump City Apprentice to fans of time travel, mysteries, and historical fiction.
